The Spartacus 15-15 field test was developed as an intermittent maximal running field test alternating running and rest periods. This study aims to determine the interest of this test to measure the overall level of aerobic capacity of Moroccan adolescents by comparing it to the continuous shuttle test, according to gender and body mass index (BMI).

179 Moroccan high school students (110 girls and 69 boys) performed the two tests. The influence of 'test type', 'gender' and their interaction was fitted on maximum heart rate (max HR), running speed at the last completed stage, and perceived exertion.

Running speed, run time and max HR were measured in both tests. Participants were classified according to their gender (male vs. female) and their BMI (normal weight vs. overweight-obese). Parametric statistics were used for data analysis. Both tests were used to estimate VO2max using the proposed equation.

For both tests, the results show a significant difference related to BMI between groups(p<0.001). According to gender, Male participants had a better level of speed. In addition, contrary to Spartacus test, shuttle test showed a significant difference between males and females (p < 0.001). Normal weight or physically active schoolchildren had better aerobic capacity and a healthier body composition. Compared to the Shuttle test, the Spartacus provides a 13% higher final speed (13.2vs. 11.7km/h) and a total test time 2.2 times longer (11.1vs. 5.1 min) (p < 0.001).

Our research showed that Spartacus test was highly reproducible among adolescents with obesity and that higher VMA was obtained using this test compared with shuttle test and makes it possible to reach the same maximum psychophysiological state of studied parameters.
Hassan Benchelha, Miloud Chakit, Mustapha Mouilly, Karim Nadir, Mohammed Barkaoui, Abdelhak Moustaine, Abdelkarim Elkhatir, Ahmed O.
